Costas H. Kefalas, MD, MMM, CPE, FACG, practices general gastroenterology at Akron Digestive Disease Consultants, Inc. in Akron, Ohio, since 2003, and is the President of the group. He is Professor of Internal Medicine at Northeast Ohio Medical University and is on the Medical Staff at Summa Health in Akron, where he served on the Board of Directors from 2017-2022. Dr. Kefalas completed an acelerated BS/MD program in 1997 at the University of Akron, where he was a University Scholar in the Honors Program, and at Northeast Ohio Medical University. He completed an Internal Medicine Residency at Summa Health in 2000 and a Gastroenterology Fellowship at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, in 2003. In 2015, Dr. Kefalas earned a Master of Medical Management (MMM) from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. He is currently enrolled in the M.S. in Population Health program at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. In 2024, Dr. Kefalas became a Certified Physician Executive (CPE). Dr. Kefalas is the ACG Treasurer and serves on the ACG Board of Trustees. He has served as Chair of the ACG Board of Governors, and as the ACG Governor for Northern Ohio. From 2011-2020 he served as an ACG Representative to the Digestive Disease National Coalition (DDNC). From 2014-2016, Dr. Kefalas was DDNC President. Dr. Kefalas is President of the GI Quality Improvement Consortium, Ltd. (GIQuIC). Dr. Kefalas co-founded the Ohio Gastroenterology Society in 2009 and was Founding President from 2011-2013. In 2015, he was appointed a Trustee of the Ohio Medical Quality Foundation Board by Ohio Governor John Kasich and served until 2017. Through his service with professional societies, Dr. Kefalas has lectured on health policy and practice management, and has advocated on behalf of patients and gastrointestinal disease at both the federal and state levels.
