Suntrea Hammer, MD, FASCP, FCAP, is an Associate Professor of Pathology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and the Director of Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathology. Dr. Hammer received her Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI. She completed additional training in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, as well as focused fellowship training in general surgical pathology and gastrointestinal and liver pathology at the University of Michigan. Her practice focuses on neoplastic and inflammatory pathology with an emphasis on the liver and the gastrointestinal tract. Dr. Hammer is actively involved in the pathology community both locally and nationally. She currently serves as the Vice President of the Texas Society of Pathologists with a focus on the engagement of trainees and new in practice pathologists. She also volunteers significant time with the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, the American Society of Clinical Pathology, and the United States Gastrointestinal Pathology Society. Dr. Hammer also educates other on the field of pathology, serving as the faculty advisor for the Student Pathology Interest Group, the Director of the Bain fellowship in Pathology, and the course director for the surgical pathology rotations for second and fourth year medical students. Dr. Hammer’s research interests are heavily focused on gastroesophageal adenocarcinoma, quality improvement, and the effects of neoadjuvant therapy in gastrointestinal and pancreatobiliary carcinomas.
