Santhi Swaroop Vege, MD, MACG, is Professor of Medicine, Director Pancreas Group, Consultant, Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology, at the Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, MN. Dr. Vege has 35 years of experience as a staff physician in academic gastroenterology and with pancreatic diseases, especially pancreatitis. He has a proven track record in all 3 shields ( clinical, research and education). Dr. Vege has published many original papers ( > 250), text book chapters, systematic reviews, and practice guidelines, and had reviewer roles for national and international activities on acute pancreatitis and for journals like NEJM and Gastro. He has 12 publications with citations of over 100. Dr Vege has written many guidelines for various prestigious organizations, been published in JAMA and Gastroenterology (3 publications in 1 year), been an invited reviewer to NEJM, an invited technical reviewer on acute pancreatitis for Gastroenterology, and a chapter on acute pancreatitis in Sleisenger (in preparation). He has contributed several cards for UpToDate for nearly 10 years. Dr. Vege has served as a co-director for GI courses in various countries (UAE, Australia twice, Brazil twice, Spain, India, and others). He received an NIH grant and successfully completed a pentoxifyllin) trial in acute pancreatitis, the only drug trial in acute pancreatitis from the U.S. in decades.
