Hailemichael Desalegn, MD, PhD, is a Professor and Consultant Gastroenterologist at St. Paul's Hospital Millennium Medical College. He completed his medical school and specialty in Internal Medicine at Jimma University in Ethiopia. In 2014, he also finished a fellowship program in Gastroenterology/Hepatology at Addis Ababa University, College of Health Sciences. Dr. Hailemichael holds a PhD in Tropical and Infectious Disease, with a focus on simplified treatment criteria and non-invasive fibrosis markers for Hepatitis B Virus infection. He is involved in various roles and initiatives related to Hepatitis B in Ethiopia. He is the co-PI for the Hepatitis B treatment scale-up in Ethiopia through a post-doc program at Vestfold Hospital Trust-Norway and a co-founder of EtNoHep (Ethio-Norwegian Hepatology Association), which aims to improve the care of patients with Hepatitis B in Ethiopia. He is also a co-founder of HEPSANET (Hepatitis in Africa network), which is an African network working on producing simplified Hepatitis B treatment criteria for Africa. Dr. Hailemichael is the founder and director of the SubSaharan Africa Gastroenterology iECHO clinic. He serves as a member of the technical working group and guideline developer for the Viral Hepatitis program in Ethiopia. Additionally, he is part of the Guideline Development Groups for the WHO Hepatitis B Guideline, 2024. In 2022, he was recognized as one of the Hepatitis Elimination Champions and serves on the technical advisory board for the Coalition for Global Hepatitis Elimination. He has also completed his Advanced Hepatology clinical research fellowship from the University of Western Ontario, Canada.
