Hetal Karsan, MD, FACG, is a graduate of Indiana University in Bloomington, where he won awards from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute for undergraduate biomedical research, and the Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis. He completed both internship and residency at Boston University Medical Center and then clinical fellowships in both gastroenterology and hepatology at University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Medical Center. While at UCLA, he received additional training in interventional endoscopy and liver transplantation, including UNOS certification. He also completed formal advanced clinical research training at UCLA and was nominated for Teaching Fellow of the Year by the Department of Internal Medicine. Dr. Karsan has co-authored four peer-reviewed gastroenterology textbooks, including being the co-author of the American College of Gastroenterology’s Guide to the Guidelines, part of a three-volume series offering insights to the ACG clinical practice guidelines. Dr. Karsan also served as associate editor of The American Journal of Gastroenterology and as editor of the Red Section for six years. He is the current Chair of the Credentials Committee, International Governor, and Governor for Georgia for the ACG. He has served as CME course director for more than a dozen gastroenterology and hepatology conferences, including a national GI board review course, based upon his Acing the GI Exam textbook series. He has maintained his ABIM board certifications in Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology and Transplant Hepatology. He has been elected as Fellow of the ACG, AGA, ASGE and AASLD. He currently also serves as the Chair of Medical Education for United Digestive. In addition, he serves as Adjunct Professor of Medicine in the Division of Digestive Diseases at Emory University School of Medicine and has been recognized as one of Castle Connolly’s Top Doctors through their physician-led, research-based selection process for the past five years.
