Brennan Spiegel, MD, MSHS, FACG, directs Health Services Research at Cedars-Sinai and the Master’s Degree Program in Health Delivery Science. Holding the George and Dorothy Gourrich Chair in Digital Health Ethics, he leads the Center for Outcomes Research and Education (CS-CORE), a multidisciplinary team exploring digital health technologies like wearable biosensors, smartphone apps, virtual reality (VR), and social media to enhance patient care and outcomes. Dr. Spiegel's team at Cedars-Sinai developed one of the largest medical VR programs, pioneering Medical Extended Reality (MXR) to treat conditions such as pain, anxiety, depression, and irritable bowel syndrome. He has authored numerous medical textbooks, over 270 peer-reviewed articles, and the book "VRx: How Immersive Therapeutics Will Revolutionize Medicine," recognized by Wired Magazine as a top science book of 2020. His work has been featured in major media outlets like The New York Times, Bloomberg, and Forbes. Beyond digital health, Dr. Spiegel conducts research in psychometrics, health economics, epidemiology, and various healthcare topics, with funding from NIH, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, PCORI, and others. He is the immediate past editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Gastroenterology and was among the first to study COVID-19's gastrointestinal effects. Dr. Spiegel continues to practice clinical medicine and teaches at Cedars-Sinai. He earned his BA from Tufts University, MD from New York Medical College (Alpha Omega Alpha honors), and MSHS from UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. He completed his residency at Cedars-Sinai and fellowship at UCLA Medical Center. As a sought-after speaker, he presents nationally and internationally on his expertise in digital health innovations.
