Richard I. Rothstein, MD, MACG, is the Joseph M. Huber Professor and Chair, Emeritus, of the Department of Medicine at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth and for the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. He is a Professor of Medicine and of Surgery. Dr. Rothstein graduated from Boston University School of Medicine (1980), and did his residency training in Internal Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester, MA (1980-1983). His fellowship training in Gastroenterology was at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Hanover, NH (1983-1985) joining the medical School faculty in 1985. Dr. Rothstein was Director of Gastroenterological Research and Director of the Gastrointestinal Motility Lab, before becoming the Section Chief of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in 1997, a position held for 15 years. He served as the Associate Dean for CME from 1993 to 2013, and served as the Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs until 2023.. Dr. Rothstein has a special interest in esophageal function and disease and participated in the research and development of endoscopic therapies for the management of GERD and of Barrett’s esophagus. Other work includes chemo-interventional trials for prevention of gastrointestinal neoplasia, the endoscopic treatment of obesity and diabetes, the evolving field of NOTES (natural orifice translumenal endoscopic surgery), and the potential role of robotics in endoscopy. Dr. Rothstein has participated in numerous committees for the ACG, AGA, and ASGE. He served as a Governor in the ACG for New Hampshire, and was honored in 2023 with the title of Master of the ACG. He participates actively in national and international educational programs concerning current and future endoscopic technologies. He has been consistently funded in his research efforts for over 35 years and has continuously published papers, chapters and abstracts in his areas of interest.
